German police are hunting a 21-year-old suspect after a white van ploughed into people near Berlin Pride celebrations, killing one person and injuring at least 16 others.

Three victims were left with life-threatening injuries following the attack in Tiergarten, close to Berlin’s Brandenburg Gate.

Police identified the suspect as a known member of Berlin’s Islamist scene and warned that he may be armed and dangerous.

Officers searched properties across the German capital and collected evidence from the wrecked van, while investigators also examined reports that several victims suffered stab wounds.

The suspect’s precise role and motive have not yet been established.

The attack brought Berlin’s Christopher Street Day Pride celebrations to an early end, with crowds ordered to leave and avoid the surrounding area.

A major manhunt remains underway as police appeal for witnesses, photographs and footage.
