Andy Burnham has warned ministers to “look hard” at their departmental budgets as he chaired the first meeting of his new Cabinet in Downing Street.
The new Prime Minister told Cabinet members that the government must examine “all possible ways” to ease the cost-of-living crisis, while remaining prepared to reprioritise spending and make difficult financial decisions.
Burnham said he wanted to lead a “cost-of-living government” focused on reducing the pressure facing families across Britain.
His remarks followed the announcement that VAT will be removed from household electricity bills from October, a measure expected to benefit 29 million households.
Burnham said further support would require fiscal discipline, departmental budget reviews and clear explanations of how every new measure will be funded.
