Andy Burnham delivers his first speech as Prime Minister outside 10 Downing Street after meeting King Charles at Buckingham Palace and accepting the invitation to form a new government.
The new Labour leader declared that Britain needed a political “CIRCUIT BREAKER” and promised the “BIGGEST CHANGES IN THE LAST 40 YEARS” as he set out plans for a new political and economic model.
Burnham acknowledged growing public frustration with Westminster, admitting: “WE HAVE NOT BEEN GOOD ENOUGH, AND WE NEED TO BE BETTER.” He said Britain had taken “SOME WRONG TURNS” during the 1980s, criticising the centralisation of political power, privatisation of economic power and the deindustrialisation of communities across the country.
The incoming Prime Minister promised to transfer power away from Westminster, place essential services under stronger public control, support British industry and introduce a new 10-year plan for the country.
He also pledged immediate measures to ease the cost-of-living crisis, build more council homes, help young people into employment and increase mental health support.
Burnham said his first instruction after entering Number 10 would be to begin work on ending rough sleeping, before calling for national unity and urging Britain to “BELIEVE AGAIN”.
