Southern Europe is facing increasingly severe wildfire seasons as a miniature three-day-heatwave has sent temperatures soaring above 40 degrees Celsius on Tuesday.
A wildfire in Spain’s central Guadalajara province is burning for a sixth consecutive day, becoming the largest blaze of the year. 1,200 residents have been evacuated from their homes as the wildfire expanded to more than 29,000 hectares.
Meanwhile, Hellenic Red Cross workers in Athens set up a station to provide water and advice on managing heat at the Acropolis, as Greece experienced its first heatwave of the summer.
With thousands of heat-related deaths tallies in an already alarmingly hot start to the summer, many will need to carefully navigate the remainder of the season.
