Prime Minister Andy Burnham has opened Number 10 North in Manchester, describing the occasion as potentially “the best day” of his life after a dramatic first week in Downing Street.
Burnham said the new government base would help move power beyond London, strengthen cooperation between Whitehall, regional mayors and local authorities, and ensure that no part of Britain is forgotten.
He described Number 10 North as the “nerve centre for a rewired Britain” and a “situation room for growth”.
The Prime Minister also hit back at critics questioning the cost of the project or dismissing it as a short-lived gimmick.
Burnham insisted it was not simply another government office, claiming power, investment and new ideas would flow through the Manchester base to communities across England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland.
