A state of emergency has been declared in north-central Chile’s Coquimbo region and the Huesco province after a catastrophic, days-long storm killed at least 10 people and injured 17 others.
In the span of just one hour Sunday evening, Coquimbo was hit with 20 millimeters of rainfall — the amount it typically receives over the course of a month – the National Service for Disaster Prevention and Response (SENAPRED) said.
From Saturday to Sunday, 84.9 millimeters were recorded.
The "abnormal and extreme precipitation” was also felt in Atacama, which recorded 102.2 millimeters.
As a result of road closures caused by mass flooding, roughly 100,000 people remain in isolation, with 150,000 without electricity, and approximately 2,200 displaced from their homes altogether.
At least four people have been reported missing.
