A ‘gentle’ local woman is in intensive care after a man stabbed her as she said prayers in her local church in Tramore in Co Waterford.
Mary McNamara, who was described by locals as a ‘kind’ and dedicated parishioner, was attacked as she said the Rosary ahead of 10am Mass at Holy Cross Church in the seaside Co Waterford town.
Ms McNamara, who is in her 50s and well known in Tramore, was kneeling and saying her prayers at the top of the church when the attacker came up the aisle, stopped in front of her, and "lunged" at her, a witness told the Irish Mirror.
The terrified victim fled for her life - but the knife wielding man pursued her and stabbed her in the torso.
Horrified onlookers attempted to intervene - and the man escaped the building.
