A 28-year-old man has been charged with the murder of former government minister Ann Widdecombe following what police have described as a targeted attack.

Joshua Kerry, from Rotherham, is due to appear at Westminster Magistrates’ Court after the Crown Prosecution Service authorised the murder charge.

Counter Terrorism Policing is leading the investigation, with detectives examining the circumstances surrounding Widdecombe’s death.

Police said establishing the motivation remains a key part of the investigation, including whether there may have been a political motive.

The investigation remains ongoing, and the charge against Kerry is an allegation that has not yet been proven in court.
