German police shot dead the 21-year-old suspect in the Berlin Pride attack after he allegedly ran towards officers with a bladed weapon during an operation in Spandau.
One woman was killed and 29 people were injured when a white van drove into crowds near Christopher Street Day celebrations in Tiergarten park, close to Berlin’s Brandenburg Gate.
Authorities said some victims were also injured with a bladed weapon.
German Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt said the evidence gathered so far points to an Islamist terrorist attack.
The suspected driver had a history of radicalisation and was known to authorities as a member of Berlin’s Islamist scene.
Prosecutors said the suspect had previously tried to join the Islamic State group, also known as ISIS. He was convicted of preparing a serious act of violence and publishing ISIS propaganda before being released from custody pending an appeal.
A second person detained following the Berlin Pride van and knife attack has since been released, while the wider investigation continues.
