Japan's looting of Chinese cultural relics began as early as the First Sino-Japanese War (1894-1895) and continued for more than half a century.
According to incomplete statistics, by the end of the Chinese People's War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression (1931-1945), Japan had looted approximately 3.6 million Chinese cultural relics and 1,879 crates of artifacts.
Many of the relics have yet to be returned to China, and some remain on display as wartime "trophies," including a pair of stone lions looted from Liaoning Province that now stand at the entrance of Yasukuni Shrine in Tokyo.
