Graham Death Investigation and Sanctions Fallout

President Donald Trump dismissed the FBI’s investigation into the death of Senator Lindsey Graham, saying the bureau would be “wasting their time” and that conspiracy theories about a Russian hit were unfounded.

The sudden death of Graham has thrown the fate of his signature Russia sanctions bill into doubt, with the legislation that would allow tariffs of up to 100% on top buyers of Russian oil and gas depending on whether his successor continues his hawkish stance.

Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent ruled out running for the vacant South Carolina seat, while a close ally of Graham questioned the “ridiculous positions” taken by Republicans already eyeing the seat.

The bill’s supporters in both parties hope it will gain momentum in Graham’s honour.
