UK Social Media Ban for Under-16s Set for 2027

UK Social Media Ban for Under-16s Set for 2027

Prime Minister Keir Starmer announced a near-total ban on social media for children under 16, set to take effect by spring 2027.

The legislation targets major platforms including TikTok, Snapchat, Instagram, and YouTube.

Tech industry leaders, including Elon Musk, and Meta have strongly criticized the move, while disability advocates warn it could cut a 'lifeline' for disabled teenagers seeking community online.

Education Secretary Bridget Phillipson acknowledged the ban is 'no silver bullet' but argued it was a necessary step to protect children's mental health.

The move follows similar bans already in place in Australia and other nations.
