Calbayog airport tightens security for runway build

The Civil Aviation Authority of the Philippines ordered biometric screening and increased CCTV coverage at Calbayog Airport following concerns about illegal cargo smuggling.

The runway extension, slated for completion by early 2027, will add 1,200 metres, allowing larger regional jets to operate.

Local business leaders welcomed the upgrade, citing expected boosts to tourism and trade in Eastern Visayas.

Authorities warned that any breach of the new protocols will result in immediate suspension of construction activities.
