Russia missile tests near disputed islands anger Japan

Russia's Pacific Fleet conducted Bastion missile tests near the disputed Kuril Islands, which Japan claims as its Northern Territories.

The exercises came shortly after President Putin's visit to the islands, which had already drawn a protest from Tokyo.

Japan summoned Russia's ambassador and lodged a formal complaint.

The tests are seen as a further strain on bilateral relations amid the Ukraine conflict.
