SpaceX plans to slam Falcon 9 stage onto the Moon

SpaceX announced that it will intentionally crash a spent Falcon 9 second stage onto the Moon’s near side at seven times the speed of sound.

The impact is expected to generate a crater and will be the fastest human‑made object to hit a natural satellite.

Engineers say the experiment will provide data on high‑velocity impacts in a low‑gravity environment.

The mission is slated for later this year as part of the company’s broader lunar‑exploration roadmap.
