T. rex ‘Gus’ Sells for $50.1 Million

The T. rex skeleton, one of the largest and most complete ever discovered, fetched $50.1 million after a ten-minute bidding war among seven prospective buyers at Sotheby’s.

The price surpassed the previous record of $44.6 million paid for a stegosaurus in 2024.

Gus, standing 12.5 feet tall and 38 feet long, took three years to excavate and prepare.

Palaeontologists have condemned the sale, warning that such commercialisation locks irreplaceable scientific specimens away from researchers and the public.
