Nicaragua’s Ortega Ends All Future Elections
Ortega, who has held power since 2007 alongside his wife, Vice President Rosario Murillo, said elections would not be held to prevent the opposition from seizing power.
The move formalizes the authoritarian turn of a government that has already jailed political rivals and cracked down on dissent.
The United States and human rights groups denounced the decision as a death knell for democracy in Nicaragua.
It comes as Ortega’s current term is set to expire next year, raising fears of further repression.
