South Korea president proposes talks with North

In a speech marking the 81st Liberation Day, Lee urged Pyongyang to abandon confrontation and begin negotiations.

He proposed a formal end to the Korean War, which has technically been ongoing since 1953.

Lee also called for dialogue on denuclearization and inter-Korean cooperation.

The proposal comes amid heightened tensions and North Korea's continued missile tests.
