Potential US ban on Chinese AI models could cost $12 bn

Researchers at the Brookings Institution calculated that a United States ban on Chinese open‑weight artificial‑intelligence models would shave roughly $12 billion off the annual revenue of U.S. firms that depend on those services for cloud computing, data analytics and product development.

The study warns that a blanket restriction could also slow innovation and push American companies toward less‑transparent domestic alternatives.
