South Africa Upsets South Korea, Reaches World Cup Knockouts

Bafana Bafana achieved a historic milestone on Wednesday, reaching the World Cup knockout stage for the first time with a 1-0 win over South Korea in Guadalupe, Mexico.

Thapelo Maseko’s 63rd-minute goal capped a stunning turnaround for Hugo Broos’ side, who had lost their opening match 4-1 to Mexico.

The result eliminated South Korea’s hopes of controlling their own destiny, left them third in Group A, and awaiting other results to see if they can advance as one of the best third-placed teams.

South Africa will face Canada in Los Angeles in the round of 32.
