Canada‑U.S. trade talks hit by tariff threat

Canadian Trade Minister Mary Ng told U.S. officials that a 50 % tariff on Canadian dairy, lumber and steel would be “catastrophic” for the bilateral relationship.

The United States, citing domestic industry concerns, has signaled readiness to move forward with punitive measures unless concessions are made.

Both sides have agreed to a series of technical working‑group meetings to try to bridge the gap before the deadline in September.
