Russia missile test near Japan-claimed islands

Russia conducted a rare missile test near the Southern Kuril Islands, which Japan claims as its Northern Territories.

The exercise involved a nuclear-powered submarine and a land-based launcher.

Japan has criticized the missile tests, which came after a visit to the disputed archipelago by Russian President Vladimir Putin.

The drills have stoked tensions between the two countries.
