Guyana Ferry Capsize Kills 53, Search Continues

A ferry capsized in Guyana over the weekend, killing at least 53 people, with survivors describing scenes of terror as the vessel went down.

The 87-year-old vessel was carrying 179 passengers when it overturned on Saturday night, many more than the 116 passengers and 17 crew who were listed as being on board.

A desperate search for survivors began early Sunday, and the prime minister said 76 people had been rescued so far.

The disaster has raised serious questions about maritime safety standards and vessel overcrowding in the region.
