Rep. Lloyd Doggett (D-TX) pressed Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent about an IRS audit immunity deal President Trump reached with the Justice Department as part of a settlement of his lawsuit against the agency over the leaking of his tax returns during his first term.
“What’s involved here, sir, is the most corrupt deal in American history,” Rep. Doggett said during a Ways and Means Committee hearing.
“Truly incredible that a president of the United States could sue the people of the United States for $10 billion and then walk off with an immunity deal that no other American has every had nor could they receive.”
Secretary Bessent repeatedly declined to answer questions about IRS immunity or audits, citing ongoing litigation and taxpayer privacy laws.
