The European Union is preparing to test rules that require member countries to assist each other during crises.
The move comes as concerns grow over Washington's commitment to NATO and European security under U.S. President Donald Trump.
EU leaders will develop an “operational plan” at a summit in Cyprus starting Thursday.
They will look at how to use the bloc's military, security and trade assets effectively should one of their countries come under attack.
EU envoys will hold exercises in mid-May to explore how Article 42.7 of the bloc’s treaties could be used for collective assistance.
EU defense ministers are expected to conduct similar tests soon after.
