At least 90 people are dead following a gas explosion at a coal mine in northern China, making it China’s worst coal mine disaster in more than 16 years.
According to the country's state media, the blast occurred Friday evening in the Shanxi province, a region known as China's coal-mining heartland.
There were nearly 250 workers on site at the time of the explosion, with several of them trapped underground.
The cause is believed to be a gas explosion deep underground, with officials saying many of those injured were affected by toxic gas.
However, the investigation and rescue efforts are ongoing.
Chinese President Xi Xinping has called for authorities to “spare no effort” in treating the injured and conducting search and rescue operations.
He has also said those responsible must be held to account.
As Richard Pimenoff reports, executives of the company responsible for the mine have reportedly been detained.
