For the first time in a decade, China’s foreign affairs minister has paid a visit to Canada.
Before meeting with Prime Minister Mark Carney on his three-day trip, Wang Yi met with his Canadian counterpart, Anita Anand.
Wang’s visit comes as Canada and China work to recalibrate a once-strenuous relationship with new and expansive economic opportunities, as well as public safety and security commitments.
The Canadians foreign affairs minister said the developing economic relationship between Canada and China is “significant” and comes at a time when the federal government is focused on “diversifying our trade relationships,” as the Canada-U.S. trade war continues.
“We are committed to growing this relationship responsibly with a goal of increasing exports towards China by 50 per cent by 2030, while safeguarding Canada’s economic and national security interests and values,” Anand said at a press conference in Ottawa Friday morning.
