“Like smoking cigarettes all day”: US residents react to Canadian wildfire smoke

Global News Global News — 1min

Wildfire smoke from Canada blanketed Chicago on Thursday, reducing visibility and sending air quality to unhealthy levels.

The hazy conditions prompted many people to wear masks and limit their time outdoors.

“It's wild, because when you look outside, you think its fog and its completely covered the city but it's smoke because when we walk outside, it burns," said Stephaine Villanova, who was with her dad in downtown Chicago celebrating his 68th birthday.

"It stings a little bit and we both have respiratory issues with COPD and asthma, so it's really hard to breathe a little." Another Chicagoan, Louis Lee, said the thick air left his eyes watering.

"My eyes are literally getting misty and it's drying out my contacts," said Lee. "It's almost like smoking cigarettes all day without even having to go get Newports, man.

This is insane, bro.”
