The Trump administration has slapped sanctions on two sons of Nicaragua’s copresidents, Daniel Ortega and Rosario Murillo, along with other officials and companies tied to the country’s gold sector.
The U.S. Treasury Department accused five people and seven companies of helping the government to “generate money and maintain political control" in the Central American country.
Nicaragua’s government has cracked down on dissent since mass social protests in 2018 that the government violently repressed.
