President Donald Trump has directed his administration to speed up reviews of certain psychedelic drugs, including ibogaine.
That drug is banned under federal law but has been embraced by combat veterans and conservative lawmakers.
Trump signed an executive order Saturday that's intended to ease access to psychedelics already designated as breakthrough therapy drugs.
The Food and Drug Administration plans to issue national priority vouchers for three psychedelics next week, allowing certain drugs to get approved quickly.
Veteran organizations and psychedelic advocates say ibogaine shows promise for conditions like post-traumatic stress disorder and opioid addiction.
But ibogaine is known to sometimes trigger potentially fatal heart problems.
