Ontario funding ends for Ottawa supervised consumption sites

CTV News CTV News — 2min

The last two supervised drug consumption sites in Ottawa are closing this weekend after the Ontario government officially ended funding for the operations.

CTV's Kimberley Fowler reports that Rideau-Vanier city councillor Stephanie Plante says many people have already switched to smoking or taking pills instead of injecting.

Physicians with Ottawa Inner City Health warn the closures at the Shepherds of Good Hope and the Sandy Hill Community Health Centre will force drug use into public washrooms and alleyways.

The province is now shifting its focus to homelessness and addiction recovery treatment models, including new HART hubs located in Bells Corners and on Eccles Street.
