Belfast woke to scenes of devastation after violent disorder erupted across the city, with homes, cars and a bus set on fire during a night of chaos.

Masked groups blocked roads and torched vehicles as residents were forced to flee their properties and firefighters battled multiple blazes.

The unrest followed Monday night’s serious knife attack in Belfast.

Police appealed for calm as officers and emergency services responded to sporadic disorder, while political leaders condemned the violence.

A 30-year-old man has been charged with attempted murder, possession of a bladed article and making threats to kill in connection with the original attack.
