Senegal's lawmakers pick ousted prime minister Sonko as speaker
Senegal’s National Assembly has elected ousted Prime Minister Ousmane Sonko as parliament speaker and defied President Bassirou Diomaye Faye, who fired him days earlier.
Sonko was sacked last week after tensions with the president, leading to the resignation of the government and the previous speaker.
Faye named a new prime minister Monday.
Sonko and Faye, once allies, have disagreed on key policies, including an IMF loan.
Sonko says he won't use his new role to settle personal scores but promises to hold the government accountable.
Senegal faces a deepening debt crisis and rising living costs.
