After touring a defence manufacturing facility in southwestern Ontario, Prime Minister Mark Carney is set to announce new measures to strengthen Canasa’s own defence capabilities.

Carney’s announcement comes a week after he vowed – at the annual NATO summit in Ankara, Turkey — that Canada will increase it’s 2026 defence budget to $71.5 billion dollars, helping with the extension of “Operation Reassurance” in Latvia.

As it stands, Canada has officially met NATO’s former defence spending target of 2 per cent, but is now facing pressures to meet the current 5 per cent goal by 2035.

Additionally, Defence Minister David McGuinty revealed Tuesday the government’s plans to build a new facility in Mirabel, Que. for new military drone research.
