Sinking Rangers 'most mental game I've been involved in', says Calum Ward as Motherwell goalkeeper enjoys Twist and Shout rendition

Motherwell goalkeeper Calum Ward says their last-gasp win over Rangers was the 'most mental game' he's been involved as he hailed their resilience at Ibrox. The Steelmen led 2-0 after a scintillating first-half display where Lukas Fadinger and Emmanuel Longelo netted for the visitors.Ward was much busier after the break as Rangers rallied back to level the game through Youseff Chermiti and Nico Raskin heading into the final 20 minutes.Motherwell threw bodies on the line to prevent Rangers adding to their tally and then they hit their hosts with a sucker-punch when Longelo's deflected strike in the 90th minute flew past Jack Butland.Ward was still called into action in the 10 minutes of stoppage time that followed, with a stunning point-blank save to deny Chermiti backed up by a last-ditch clearance from Jordan McGhee on the rebound to ensure a 3-2 victory and a third win at Ibrox in three seasons. And, speaking to Lanarkshire Live Sport, Ward admitted: "That was probably the most mental game I've been involved in.

Anything that could happen, happened."We pride ourselves on being resilient to the end and that shows with the goal at the end and the result, so we are really happy."That one [save] at the end, it was a bit fo a scramble and it broke to him [Chermiti], so I just had to make myself as big as possible and, luckily, it hit my ankle and then Jordan McGhee came to the rescue to block the rebound on the line, so it was a huge moment in the game."It feels like a goal when Jordan clears it because if it had gone in after that, it would have been heart-wrenching, so it was good to see the ball go over the bar after that."It is one of those moments as a goalkeeper that feels like a goal, so it was nice."Having ran Rangers close in their previous three meetings, drawing 1-1 at Fir Park twice this term and narrowly losing 1-0 at Ibrox in December, Ward felt the win - which has put Well six points clear of Hibs in the race for fourth and put a huge dent in Rangers' title bid - has been a long time coming. He added: "We were talking leading up to this game that we'd played really well in all the previous games against Rangers and felt hard-done by not getting anything here in December, so we felt this was the chance to get our first win over them this season."We said at half-time, we knew they would come out fighting in the second half because they'll know the first half wasn't good enough from them."But we played probably one of the best halves we've played this season."We knew the crowd would be up in the second half and it would be tough - and that showed - but our resilience was great."There were spells where we could have easily folded, but we stayed strong, kept the ball, calmed the game down and got our rewards at the end."We felt we were due a win and we are really happy."At the final whistle, Well players and fans provided mutual applause as both celebrated a momentous win in Govan to the sound of a good old Well party tune. The shot-stopper added: "That Twist and Shout song doesn't get old when you win big games!"We'll be trying to put in more big performances for them in the rest of the season."The fans have been so good all season.

They have really bought into what we've tried to do from the start of the season.

It was really nice to go over there and see them cheering and singing."Motherwell's focus now turns to a trip to Falkirk on Saturday where they could take a huge step towards cementing fourth spot, having ended a run of five games without a win.But the Bairns have gotten the better of Motherwell this season, winning twice and drawing the other game, so Ward knows they must be wary as they look to settle that score. He said: "Falkirk isn't an easy place to go and they've kind of got our number this season so far, so we have to try and do something special to get the win."These top half split games are what you want to be a part of as a footballer."The last few games [before Rangers] haven't gone to plan for us in terms of results.

There haven't exactly been bad performances, it has just been moments in games where we have lacked a bit of quality."We conceded one from a corner today, which is disappointing, but we showed resilience and it is about trying to carry that on to the next few games."We've just got to focus on ourselves and try to get three points.

We try to do that in every game."Motherwell boss hails Rangers result as he claims steely Steelmen 'could have won all four games' this seasonRangers 2 Motherwell 3: Emmanuel Longelo's 90th minute winner stuns GersFormer Rangers star was having a Laff with penalty, says Shotts boss after defeat
