The communications minister, Anika Wells, says Telstra must 'face the music' and rebuild public trust after its nationwide outage, vowing that the government will hold the telco to account.

She says Telstra should provide an expedited process for customers seeking compensation.

The Australian Communications and Media Authority's deputy chair Adam Suckling says the regulator is investigating the outage.

Suckling says under laws related to the triple zero system, Telstra can face civil penalties of up to $30m if it is found that is has not complied with its obligations
