Lois Romano on President Lincoln's death: "He lasts the night but Mary's not particularly welcome in the room, which is just when another great tragedy of her life.
She's hysterical and they don't want her in there.
And in addition to that, even as he lay dying, all the powerful men in Washington are grabbing on to his pant leg.
And they want to be in that room.
And so parading through that room are senators and Supreme Court justices and and governors and and assistant secretaries of the Treasury.
It's just extraordinary the amount of people that are left in that room.
She comes in about every hour, and at one point she she comes in at a little before seven in the morning and he's still alive and she and there's not a lot of air in the room.
And she she screams and she faints because she sees him and he's by now his colors change is his face is swollen, she faints.
And the way the story goes is that Secretary of War Stanton runs out and says, get that woman out of the get that woman out of the room and don't let her back in. 20 minutes later, at 7:22, Lincoln dies and the minister, they all say a prayer, but they never invite Mary in the room.
They all say a prayer around his body.
And then, the minister comes out and says to Mary, your husband's dead.
And she is startled.
And she said, why didn't you come and get me?
And he said, because we thought it was better not to."
