Kennedy: “Are you going to be the president’s human sock puppet?”

Sen. John Kennedy (R-LA) on Tuesday mocked Sen. Elizabeth Warren's (D-MA) assertion that Federal Reserve chair nominee Kevin Warsh would be President Trump's "chosen sock puppet" if confirmed to lead the central bank.

"Are you going to be the president's human sock puppet?" Sen. Kennedy asked.

"Absolutely not," Mr. Warsh said. "I'm honored the president nominated me for the position, and I'll be an independent actor if confirmed as chairman of the Federal Reserve."

"My friend Senator Warren … suggested that you might use your power to bail out your friends if they get in trouble," Sen. Kennedy asked. "Are you going to do that?"

Mr. Warsh said he would not.

The president's nomination of Mr. Warsh to lead the Federal Reserve has come under scrutiny as the Justice Department continues its probe into current Chair Jerome Powell, which critics in both parties argue lacks substance.

Sen. Thom Tillis (R-NC) has said he will not vote to confirm any Federal Reserve nominee until the Justice Department suspends its investigation of Mr. Powell.
