The Mackenzie story begins in one of Scotland most iconic castles, Eilean Donan on the shores of Loch Duich in Kintail.
For it’s said that this was where Coineach MacCoineach - Kenneth son of Kenneth– gave his name to the clan.
In Gaelic their name means “son of the fair one” and the Mackenzie chiefs were settled on Eilean Donan by the end of the 13th century.
The chiefs of Clan Mackenzie are still formally addressed as Caber Féidh - “deer’s antlers” in Gaelic, derived from the stag’s head crest in the old Mackenzie coat of arms.
The Clan Kennedy is one of Scotland’s most powerful families of the southwest, reigning for centuries as the dominant force in Ayrshire and Carrick.
The Kennedy legacy is globally recognised, bolstered significantly by the fame of the Irish-American branch of the family, yet its heart remains firmly planted in the rugged coastline of Ayrshire, where Culzean remains one of Scotland’s most iconic landmarks.
The Clan Hamilton is one of Scotland’s most illustrious noble houses, historically serving as the "Premier Peers" of the realm.
Of Anglo-Norman origin, the family established its roots in Scotland during the 13th century when Walter fitz Gilbert of Hambledon was granted the Barony of Cadzow (later renamed Hamilton) by Robert the Bruce for his loyalty during the Wars of Scottish Independence.
The Clan MacGregor is perhaps the most romanticized and resilient of all Highland clans, famously known as the "Children of the Mist." Claiming descent from Griogair, a son of the 9th-century King Alpin, their motto "S'rioghal mo dhream" (Royal is my race) reflects their proud, ancient lineage.
Historian Carl MacDougall gives you the definitive rundown and background to some of Scotland’s most famous Clans.
Filmed and edited by Henrik Brandt.
