King Charles cracks jokes during state dinner with Donald Trump

King Charles III on Tuesday praised the ties between the U.S. and the UK, calling the relationship "an unbreakable bond of history and heritage," during a jovial state dinner at the White House.

"The story of Britain and America is one of reconciliation from adversaries to the closest of allies, not always perhaps following the straightest path," Charles said, adding, "we are determined to face the future together."

Charles told several jokes during his speech, including a reference to U.S. President Donald Trump's demolition of the East Wing of the White House to make way for a $400 million ballroom.

"I'm sorry to say that we British, of course, made our own small attempt at real estate redevelopment of the white House in 1814," he quipped.

The king, accompanied by Queen Camilla, began his day by meeting privately with Trump in the Oval Office.

In the afternoon, the king addressed the U.S. Congress, making him the first British monarch to do so since Queen Elizabeth II in 1991.

Charles is on a four-day visit to the U.S. intended to both celebrate American independence and to repair the country's fraying relationship with the U.K.

Trump’s up-and-down relationship with UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer took a particularly sour turn over the past several months as the president sought to rally international support for the war in Iran.

Charles and Camilla will continue their U.S. tour this week with stops in New York City and Virginia.
