Cambodia approves military service for males aged 18 to 25

AP News AP News

Cambodia's Cabinet has approved a law requiring males aged 18 to 25 to serve two years in the military.

This follows deadly clashes with Thailand last year.

The draft law will replace a 2006 law that was never implemented.

Women can serve voluntarily.

The Cabinet adopted the draft law on Thursday.

Fighting between Cambodia and Thailand displaced hundreds of thousands and killed about 100 Cambodians.

No new fighting has occurred since a December ceasefire, but tensions remain high.

The legislation will become law once it passes the National Assembly and Senate and is signed by King Norodom Sihamoni.
