A major incident has been declared in East Sussex after a train derailed with 150 people on board.
It has been confirmed that 20 people have been injured.
East Sussex Fire and Rescue Service said they were called to an incident between Haywards Heath and Lewes train station at 3.54pm on Thursday afternoon (August 13).
Emergency services are on the scene as people are being warned to 'avoid the area'.
British Transport Police say a major incident has been declared and have confirmed that a number of people were left trapped after three carraiges of the Southern Railway train came off the track.
Assistant Chief Constable Ian Drummond-Smith said: “We’ve declared a major incident and a significant emergency service response is ongoing at the scene, but all passengers on the train have now been safely evacuated from the service.
“Our thoughts are of course with everyone affected, and I’d like to reassure the public that we’re supporting the Rail Accident Investigation Branch to establish exactly what’s happened.
We’ll provide further information as soon as we are able”.
The ambulance service has confirmed that two people have been severely injured in the incident, with 18 others suffering 'less serious' injuries.
