Why Trump wants to paint the Eisenhower building white

President Donald Trump's plan to put a coat of white paint on the granite exterior of a historic building that's part of the White House complex is getting a hearing by a key federal agency.

The National Capital Planning Commission is meeting Thursday to consider the Republican president's proposal.

The White House says the Eisenhower Executive Office Building is in disrepair and there's no guarantee that an exterior cleaning will improve its condition.

But preservationists, architects and historians are alarmed because they say painting granite damages the stone.

Public sentiment is also overwhelmingly against the proposed paint job.
