New York Gov. Kathy Hochul announced a year-long moratorium on new AI data centres on Tuesday, as the state creates new rules to protect its power grid and the environment from the power-hungry facilities.
The decision makes New York the first state in the U.S. to impose a moratorium on the hyperscale data centres, which house thousands of computers requiring massive amounts of energy and a constant supply of water to keep cool.
“I want New York to be first in the right way — and that’s why we’re going to take the time to get it right,” Hochul said.
Earlier this year, Maine seemed poised to establish a similar moratorium, but the move was vetoed by Democratic governor Janet Mills.
