Authorities have charged a Sudanese man under a new British immigration law for allegedly piloting a boat linked to the deaths of four migrants in the English Channel.

The National Crime Agency said Saturday that Alnour Mohamed Ali, 27, was charged with endangering others during a sea journey to the U.K. The new law extends Britain's criminal jurisdiction to address dangerous crossings.

Two men and two women died in strong currents near Calais.

French authorities rescued 38 others.

Ali and 73 migrants continued to England, where he was arrested.

Ali is set to appear in Folkestone Magistrates Court.
