Heartrending images of deer and other wildlife fleeing flames, disoriented and distressed, have propagated across social media in recent days.
Less visible species - smaller mammals and insects whose populations are critical to fragile ecosystems - have also been decimated.
Groups of volunteers have been combing affected areas, searching for survivors to rehabilitate.
