The record number of wildfires burning in France and Spain are being fuelled by a drought that’s stretching across much of Europe.
But those dangerously dry conditions aren’t simply the result of a lack of rain – it’s the heat.
In southwestern France, the local mayor calls it a “worst-case scenario,” and civil protection believes it to be France’s worst wildfire ever recorded.
In Spain, similar conditions are having the same impact.
The country has already recorded four times more wildfires than last year.
One man called it an “ecological disaster,” with a forest he calls “Spain’s largest lungs" threatened by fire.
As Mike Armstrong reports, scientists worry this summer is a sign of wildfire seasons to come.
