Andy Burnham was officially elected leader of Britain's governing Labour Party on Friday, putting him on track to replace Keir Starmer as prime minister following the party's poor showing in recent local elections.
"This is a proud moment you have given me and my family today, and an emotional one, but it is one for which I am ready," said Mr. Burnham, the former mayor of Greater Manchester who recently returned to Parliament to succeed Mr. Starmer.
Mr. Burnham ran unopposed for Labour leader and is expected to be appointed prime minister by King Charles III on Monday after Mr. Starmer formally tenders his resignation.
