Asked what guardrails the Government of Canada will have on selling arms to Saudi Arabia – a country whose human rights record has long remained in question – Defence Minister David McGuinty echoed comments from Prime Minister Mark Carney that building relations with the controversial nation were about “pursuing trade opportunities.”
“We need to engage with the world and we are engaging with the world, which is why we brought a balanced approach to our relationship in Saudi,” McGuinty said.
Despite questions of Saudi Arabia’s human rights policies, Carney met with Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman in Saudi Arabia last Thursday, acquiring a new memorandum of understanding (MOU) and defence cooperation deal.
Asked himself about the visit last week, Carney said “lecturing” other countries on human rights would simply be “ineffective.”
