Labour's sharks are circling: How long can Keir Starmer cling on?

For those with long enough memories, Sir Keir Starmer’s belligerent insistence that he is “not going to walk away” may sound tonally identical to the words of another beleaguered leader from the past.

In November 1990, Margaret Thatcher cheerfully told guests at the Lord Mayor’s Banquet that she was “still at the crease” despite predictions of her demise.

The following day, her deputy, Geoffrey Howe, made his famous resignation speech in the Commons, a leadership contest ensued, and nine days later she was gone.

After the disastrous results for Labour in Thursday’s elections, it is difficult to escape the conclusion that Starmer is in similar territory.
